Who We Are

Mission: To deliver books to agencies and organizations who serve people in need.

The POP Project is an Asheville-based nonprofit organization working to spread the power and possibilities of literacy through a greater access to books. We believe that people who have access to books are enabled to become more involved citizens, stay better informed, and lead more successful and fulfilled lives.

What We Do

The POP Project collects secondhand books to redistribute within Western North Carolina communities that could benefit from access to books and the opportunities that come from higher rates of literacy and knowledge. Programs include:

  • Book Giving Programs: Donations of books to schools, shelters, housing communities, churches, community organizations, food pantries, and local and state corrections facilities.
  • Little Free Libraries: Boxes placed in several locations around Buncombe County that serve as small “libraries” offering free book exchange for children and adults.
  • Literacy Facts: Online information about county and national literacy rates and the effects of low literacy on individual success, family economics, community development, and national health.
