Volunteer: GED volunteer tutors (Math and Language Arts)

Before you even begin thinking about volunteering, ask yourself – Am I well enough to volunteer? Your safety and limiting the spread of COVID-19 is everyone’s main priority. We encourage you to review and adhere to the recommendations on the Buncombe County readiness site on how best to avoid COVID-19 and what to do if you think you might have it. Literacy Together (formerly the Literacy Council of Buncombe County) is a nonprofit organization working with children, youth, and adults to increase comprehensive literacy and English language skills through access to literacy resources and specialized instruction by trained volunteer tutors. Literacy Together relies on volunteer tutors to offer students personal instruction and high-quality materials through various programs.

Our Adult Literacy Program needs GED volunteer tutors asap!

The highest-demand GED subjects at the moment are Math and Language Arts. Most of the tutor training would be in an online, self-paced platform. The time commitment is six months. Please get in touch with Rebecca Massey: 828-254-3442, Ext. #202

Although English is their native language, Adult Literacy students are non-readers who struggle with recognizing individual written words and comprehending a sentence or longer passage. They comprise a diverse group in terms of educational background, socio-economic status, personal goals, and learning styles. Many are challenged by learning disabilities such as dyslexia. They come to us because they want to improve their job prospects, help their children in school, enroll in a GED program, or just feel better about themselves and their ability to cope in today’s world.

Check out this video to hear from several Adult Literacy Students.

Time Commitment:

2 hours/week for six months minimum

Requirements:

GED or High School diploma Participate in online training Excellent customer service skills Ability to work patiently with various levels of literacy skills Access to reliable internet  Ability to navigate virtual meetings with minimal distractions

Training:

Volunteers must undergo one of the training tracks

Basic Training which takes approximately 10 hours  GED Program Training which takes approximately 5 to 6 hours

In order to sign up for this volunteer project, simply

Click "respond" above to secure your spot and receive a notification with next steps. You can expect a follow up from the Literacy Council within 1-3 business days after responding

Why does this matter? We have to limit the number of people attending each project. This helps everyone stay safe by following COVID-19 specific safety measures. Please understand that if you show up on-site without registering first, you may be turned away so that the agency can maintain safety procedures.  Safety is our top priority and we want to be sure needs are met while also being safe. Click HERE for current NC safety guidelines.

Hands On Asheville-Buncombe is not responsible for opportunities managed by partner agencies. If you are onsite at a volunteer opportunity and don't feel safety guidelines are being followed, please connect with onsite project organizers and if not addressed, please let us know by completing our Volunteer Experience Form.

Volunteer: Junior Achievement Classroom Volunteer - Inspire K-12 Students!

JA Traditional Classroom Programs bring volunteers into the classroom to teach students, K-12, about entrepreneurship, personal financial literacy, and workforce readiness. By sharing their personal and work experiences, JA volunteers bring real-world relevance into the classroom, bridging the gap between the education and business worlds. This sharing brings the curriculum to life for students, helping them not only to better understand the JA lessons, but also to make the correlation between a solid education and the opportunities it provides. JA programs are aligned with the common core standards for Math, English and Language Arts.   • The commitment is teaching 5-7, 30–45-minute classes depending on grade level. This can be one class a week, one class each day for a week, or 3 classes one week and 2 the next week. The teacher is flexible and is willing to work with your schedule.

• The teacher remains in the room and is there to support you.

• The JA programs come in a curriculum kit with everything you need to teach the class.

• The JA Volunteer Guides are easy to follow with many hands-on grade appropriate games and activities to keep the students engaged.

• All new volunteers attend a virtual or in-person training session which will provide you with tips on teaching your JA program.

• The students will make you smile – you get WAY more than you give!

• The students LOVE JA! We work with schools in Winnebago and Outagamie County, and you can choose one near you.  If interested, please contact: Kristine Kolb kkolb@jawis.org

Volunteer: Accessioning and Data entry of Museum Artifacts

MVM is looking for volunteers to help us in our mission to educate and preserve the history of our military veterans.

The museum currently has over sixteen thousand artifacts accessioned in its collection, ranging from small items like personal awards and ribbons on through the vehicles and a naval landing craft (Higgins Boat). The museum also receives many artifact donations from veterans and their families on a regular basis. The main goal of the museum at this point is to log the donation into our books and then catalog the donated artifacts into our computer database (a program called Past Perfect) as they come in, and catch up on a backlog of artifacts currently in the collection that are not entered in the database. For this job a person can come in any day of the week, once they have been trained in the entry system. As with our docents and cashiers, there is an expectation to put in a minimum of eight hours per month. More time put in monthly will also enable the volunteer to become and stay more proficient in the use of Past Perfect. Knowledge of military items like uniforms, weapons and hardware items is a definite plus in this job, as one has to be able enter in the database what the item is and then identify what grouping in Past Perfect it will fit under.

Volunteer: Building and grounds maintenance.

MVM is looking for volunteers to help us in our mission to educate and preserve the history of our military veterans.

The museum has several needs when it comes to maintenance of its buildings and grounds. Items include things like lawn mowing, brush clearing, weed pulling, flower watering, window washing and overall floor scrubbing/mopping of the motor pool area. The museum is also interested in professional volunteers like electricians and heating/cooling specialists, that would be willing to donate all or part of their time dealing with maintenance of parts of the building requiring a licensed professional. There are also parts of the original building construction that need a final coat of paint over the original primer.

These needs would be great for groups.

Volunteer: Cashier

MVM is looking for volunteers to help us in our mission to educate and preserve the history of our military veterans.

Cashiers often are the first friendly face visitors see when they visit the museum. In addition to overseeing the PX/gift shop and checking out people’s purchases, they greet people as they enter the building, asking if they have visited the museum before and if they are a veteran. Visitors are asked to sign into the guest book. There currently is no admission fee to visit the museum, although people are told donations are greatly appreciated. Cashiers then give a brief description of the museum and ask the visitors if they would prefer a docent take them around or just go through on their own. The visitor is then handed off to the docent, or the docent is informed the visitor chooses to do a self-tour. As with the docents, the days cashiers are scheduled is open to the calendar of the volunteer, and a person can do either half or full day on the day they are scheduled. The expectation for a cashier is that they put in a minimum of eight hours per month.

Volunteer: Docent

The Military Veterans Museum and Education center provides a unique experience for its visitors when they come through the door. Each visitor is offered a personalized tour by one of our docents no matter what time they arrive at the museum. In order to accomplish this, MVM needs a solid group of docents to be on site and ready to deliver the personalized tour. It is our hope you will consider to be a part of this group in helping educate the public about the history of our veterans.

Docents at the Museum are central to museum operations on days when it is open, and they have several duties they perform as part of their job. These duties include unlocking the museum at the opening of business, turning on lights and audio-visual equipment, and checking that all is in order prior to our visitor’s arrival. At the close of business, they shut things down and lock up prior to leaving.

As the name indicates, the main job of our docents at the museum is to teach. They are available to give a full or partial tour of the museum on request or are simply available to answer the questions of guests if they choose to do a self-tour. Currently the museum has no formal script for giving visitors tours. New docents learn as they go, following experienced docents as they give tours to visitors. Knowledge of military history and wars will be helpful for a person filling this position, but it is not required. Docents are also involved in handling group tours scheduled at the museum, to possibly include setting up and taking down chairs and tables. The day a docent is scheduled is open to the calendar of the volunteer, and a person can do either half or full day on the day they are scheduled. The expectation for a docent is that they put in a minimum of eight hours per month.

The expectation for a docent is that they put in a minimum of eight hours per month.

well-being.

The Community Benefit Tree was established in 2004. This was the beginning of Community Benefit Tree, Inc.

Volunteer: Fostering Cats in Need

We are in need of foster homes to help prepare the cats in our rescue for adoption. We will set you up with the supplies and everything you need to care for the cats, cover all any needed vet appointments or costs...all you need is a quiet, separate space, and some love to share!

On April 26, 2024, the Museum celebrated the grand opening of a new permanent exhibit of our local history called 'You Are Here'. ‘You Are Here’ provides students, residents, and visitors an opportunity to learn about the rich history of the Fox Valley region. In addition to this new exhibit and the permanent Houdini exhibit, in recent years the History Museum has highlighted important, yet often overlooked, segments of our community with exhibits like Stone of Hope: Black Experiences in the Fox Cities and (In)Visible: Homelessness in Appleton.
