Who We Are
Horizon High School opened in 2005, we have been in operation for 18 years. Our Founders, John Fournelle and Judi Munaker, have worked tirelessly over the years to keep our doors open with very little financial assistance. John is currently our HHS Board President and Judi is currently our HHS Board Secretary. We are the only High School in WI for teens in recovery from addiction and substance use disorder and one of 45 recovery schools in the nation. We provide support for young people in the Madison/Dane County area of Wisconsin who suffer from addiction and substance use disorder. Our students have suffered with many social and environmental factors that affect their mental health. Our students suffer with trauma and abuse, homelessness and food insecurity. The majority of students also have co-occurring mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, etc. This time in history is filled with economic uncertainty, a rapidly evolving social and political context, a deadly pandemic and other public health crises, and environmental concerns. Our school is small with only 15 students.
