Who We Are

Mission: To empower students, teachers, and families through positive relationships to maintain a culture of lifelong learning and excellence.

North Buncombe Middle School (NBMS) is a middle school serving seventh and eighth grade students in the Weaverville area of the Buncombe County School system. The NBMS community seeks to challenge and empower all members toward emotional, physical, social, and academic growth. 

North Buncombe Middle School is a partner in the Asheville Buncombe Middle Grades Network, which utilizes a collective impact strategy that brings together Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools, and community partners around a shared vision of creating success-ready 9th-graders and improving graduation rates.

What We Do

North Buncombe Middle School provides classes in core academic areas consistent with the North Carolina Common Core Standards, including English /language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, and information/technology, and in various exploratory areas such as physical education, health, art education, world languages, and career and technical education. Additionally, students are provided numerous extracurricular activities including:

  • Athletics: Fall, winter, and spring team and individual sports for boys and girls, including soccer, basketball, baseball, track, tennis, wrestling, volleyball, and others. 
  • Clubs: Extracurricular opportunities for students including Project Lead the Way, a STEM program engaging students in hands-on, problem-based learning; Junior Beta Club; and Junior Optimist Club.
  • Music: Opportunities to participate and perform with the Strings Orchestra for violin, viola, cello, and bass; with the NBMS Band; or with the NBMS chorus.
