The Military Veterans Museum and Education center provides a unique experience for its visitors when they come through the door. Each visitor is offered a personalized tour by one of our docents no matter what time they arrive at the museum. In order to accomplish this, MVM needs a solid group of docents to be on site and ready to deliver the personalized tour. It is our hope you will consider to be a part of this group in helping educate the public about the history of our veterans.
Docents at the Museum are central to museum operations on days when it is open, and they have several duties they perform as part of their job. These duties include unlocking the museum at the opening of business, turning on lights and audio-visual equipment, and checking that all is in order prior to our visitor’s arrival. At the close of business, they shut things down and lock up prior to leaving.
As the name indicates, the main job of our docents at the museum is to teach. They are available to give a full or partial tour of the museum on request or are simply available to answer the questions of guests if they choose to do a self-tour. Currently the museum has no formal script for giving visitors tours. New docents learn as they go, following experienced docents as they give tours to visitors. Knowledge of military history and wars will be helpful for a person filling this position, but it is not required. Docents are also involved in handling group tours scheduled at the museum, to possibly include setting up and taking down chairs and tables. The day a docent is scheduled is open to the calendar of the volunteer, and a person can do either half or full day on the day they are scheduled. The expectation for a docent is that they put in a minimum of eight hours per month.
